Esterbrook Pens and What They Will Do describes this as "a fine-pointed stub pen. Very popular, and well adapted for backhand writing."
Described in contemporary advertising (The 1883 Esterbrook Catalog) as, "#788 – The Oval Point Engrossing – Gray – A medium stub pen, much liked for back hand." Finishes include Gray and Gold. Use of the "Double Oval Point" descriptor was dropped after this catalog came out. The 1938 Esterbrook Catalog says, "Oval Point - Firm, small stub. The perfect pen for backhand writing. Gray finish. Gold plated"
The Esterbrook Project describes this nib as "a straight-bodied pen with a short stub nib and a crescent moon vent hole. Little flexibility. Gray finish." The #788 Oval Point is distinguished from a nib with the same number, but a different descriptor--the Esterbrook #788 Engrossing Short Nib.
Brandon McKinney's analysis of the markings and grindings date this version of the #788 Oval Point Pen as 1929-1939.
Versions
There are six distinct versions of the Esterbrook #788 Oval Point Pen in the Chappy's Nibs collection (there is also a seventh version of the Oval Point with a different nib number, specifically the #787 Oval Point Pen):
- Version 1: gray finish
- Version 2: gray finish, plus an added line, "MADE IN U.S.A."
(These version names are defined for this collection alone, and are not necessarily industry-wide terms.)
The nib pictured below is Version 1.
