The 1938 Esterbrook Catalog says, "Firm, medium. Large pen with large ink capacity. Gray finish."
The Esterbrook Project describes this nib as having "a tapered body with a sharp point, a multilobed vent hole, and lightly curved slits at the shoulders." The #702 Modified Slant is distinguished from a virtually identical nib with the same number, but a different descriptor--the Esterbrook #702 School Pen.
Brandon McKinney's analysis of the markings and grindings date this version of the #702 Modified Slant Pen as 1929-1939.
Versions
There are two distinct versions of the Esterbrook #702 in the Chappy's Nibs collection:
- Version 1: gray finish, Modified Slant
- Version 2: gray finish, School
(These version names are defined for this collection alone, and are not necessarily industry-wide terms.)
The nib pictured below is Version 1.
