Described in contemporary advertising (Zanarian) as: "Hunt's Round Pointed Pens. No. 59. University. Fine point. Moderate action. Very popular."
Pendemonium says, "The C. Howard Hunt Pen company was formed in 1899 in Camden, New Jersey. Hunt invented the smooth gliding round pointed pen, which took about 15 different steps to make. The factory was moved to Statesville, NC in 1958. One of the more famous nibs made by Hunt was The Speedball Pen, which could do thick and thin lines." The Blam Nib site adds that since 1997, Hunt Pens are manufactured by the Speedball Art Products Company. (Although Speedball still produces dip nibs, the 59 University nib is not currently produced.)
Versions
There are two distinct versions of the Hunt #59 University Pen in the Chappy's Nibs collection:
- Version 1: gray finish, the company marking is HUNT
- Version 2: gray finish, the company marking is C.H.HUNT PEN CO. and U.S.A. moves from lateral endcap to 4th line
(These version names are defined for this collection alone, and are not necessarily industry-wide terms.)
The nib pictured below is Version 2.
